On October 26, 2005, on the so-called “government route” on “Bulgaria” boulevard in Sofia, banker Emil Kuylev was gunned down. Immediately after the murder, the top people in the country – Interior Minister, Rumen Petkov, Chief Prosecutor, Nikola Filchev, and President Parvanov publically declared that Kyulev’s business was “clean.”

The American Ambassador in Sofia at the time, John Beyrle, however, has been of a different opinion since the same afternoon he sent to the State Department a report titled “TOP BULGARIAN MONEY LAUNDERER SHOT DEAD IN SOFIA” [05SOFIA1847]. He does not mention the name of the “top launderer,” but provides in the text a thorough biography and business portrait of Kuylev – a former policeman, who had used his connections in the services to create consulting businesses, and later a bank, in partnership with Michael Chorny, receiving a “sweetheart deal” from the State – the right to handle, through Roseximbank, all payments of the Bulgarian Tax Directorate and the Customs Agency, as well as the operations of the biggest tax-payers in the country; a founder of Vazrajdane Business Club along with Multigroup boss Iliya Pavlov (shot dead in 2003) and Vasil "The Skull" Bozhkov; a former advisor to President Georgi Parvanov and, (according to unconfirmed reports), a major political campaign sponsor of the National Movement for Stability and Prosperity (NDSV) party of former King and Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg, of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, and of Parvanov himself for his 2001 campaign – these are the traits of the image of one of the wealthiest people in Bulgaria.

Kyulev had applied significant effort to clean this image, even hiring an American lobbyist. Seemingly, the result had not been very convincing because, as the Ambassador points out, the Foundation for Fight against Human Trafficking, established by the banker, was suspected in money laundering.

This Saturday, July 2, Democracy Now's Amy Goodman will moderate a conversation with Julian Assange and Slovenian philosopher, Slavoj Žižek. The event is sponsored by the Frontline Club, and broadcast from The Troxy theater in London.

The focus of the event will be the "ethics and philosophy behind WikiLeaks’ work, the talk will provide a rare opportunity to hear two of the world’s most prominent thinkers discuss some of the most pressing issues of our time," according to the Democracy Now web site.

The conversation coincides with the "publication of the paperback edition of Žižek’s Living in the End Times, in which he argues that new ways of using and sharing information, in particular WikiLeaks, are one of a number of harbingers of the end of global capitalism as we know it."

LEGAL ACTION BY WIKILEAKS AND DATACELL AGAINST VISA AND MASTERCARD

WikiLeaks and Datacell (a service provider assisting WikiLeaks) are to sue Visa & MasterCard for engaging in an unlawful, U.S. influenced, financial blockade.

On June 9th a the law firms Bender von Haller Dragested in Denmark and Reykjavik Law Firm in Iceland acting on behalf of DataCell and WikiLeaks told the companies that if the blockade is not removed they will be litigated in Denmark and a request for prosecution will be filed with the EU Commission. Visa Europe, MasterCard Europe, and Teller (a Danish company licensed to process transactions on behalf of the card companies) are the subjects of the complaint.

It was pointed out to these companies that their coordinated action on December 7th last year to block all credit card transactions to WikiLeaks and DataCell constituted a serious violation of the Competition Rules of the EU (Article 101(1) and 102). Furthermore, that the actions of these companies have violated Danish merchant laws when they terminated the payment services and by refused to reinstate them.

Visa Europe, Master Card Europe, Teller and Korta where told that if the payment services would not be reinstated and liability for the damages accepted, DataCell and WikiLeaks would file a complaint to the European Commission regarding violation of EU competition laws and file a lawsuit with Danish Maritime and Commercial Court (“Sø- og Handelsretten ”).

The Greek government is prepared to vote on austerity measures on Wednesday, June 29. The vote will take place in the midst of a general strike launched by the unions to oppose cuts that would most impact minimum wage earners and Greeks who are struggling the most in the current economic conditions.

Talk has been circulating on whether a military coup might happen if austerity measures pass. In a message from an “Independent Movement of Military People” to the Minister of Defence Panagiotis Beglitis, the army chided him for making false promise and creating a wealthy network of strong patronage ties.

The message calls out the Minister for offending Military Honor, which is supposed to be a public good. It asserts that the Independent Movement will continue to fight for its rights and entitlements, which are owed to members of the Army, and families of deceased colleagues.

“We are thinking Greeks who gave an oath to uphold the Constitution and Laws” of Greece, the message declares. And, furthermore, it chastises the Minister for failing to deal with the Veterans’ associations and current and pressing issues facing Armed Forces officers properly.

A number of US State Embassy cables have been released by WikiLeaks in recent months. The Greek newspaper Ta Nea has been covering revelations in the cables.

One cable from June 2008 addresses the military-to-military relationship between Greece and the US by looking at “the Good, the Bad and the Necessary.” A section shows how the Greek military has depended on the patronage of the US:

In San Francisco, New York and Chicago, support contingents for Pfc. Bradley Manning, the accused WikiLeaks whistleblower, participated in Sunday’s gay pride parades. Those who marched in contingents aimed to make the LGBT community more aware of Bradley Manning.

Andy Thayer, co-founder of the Gay Liberation Network and Bradley Manning Support Network Advisory Board member, says he and others in the LGBT community organized a contingent because Manning is a gay man and “we think it is important to stand up for those in our own community who are being victimized.”

The Bradley Manning Support Network finds Manning is “being increasingly hailed by LGBT activists as a hero.” Lieutenant Daniel Choi, an active and well-known gay rights advocate who helped contribute to the movement that ultimately results in the repeal of DADT, recently announced he was “proud to stand by side with Bradley Manning” and on the day of the pride parades tweeted, “I dedicate this Pride to American Hero Private Bradley Manning, our fellow gay freedom fighter currently locked up in Ft. Leavenworth, KS.”

The pride parade in Chicago was one of the first major events for the Chicago chapter of Bradley Manning supporters. Here in Chicago, activists are confronting the fact that many do not know of Manning.

Министерот за надворешни работи на Шпанија, Моратинос, побарал средба со заменик секретарот Стаинберг за да ја дискутира ситуацијата во Западен Балкан. Тој ја потврдил шпанската поддршка за Бутмирскиот процес (Butmir process) и побарал благослов од САД за предложената средба во Мадрид на босанските и регионалните лидери. Рекол дека Шпанија ќе заземе не-попречувачки однос кон Косово за време на шпанското претседателство со ЕУ во првата половина на 2010. Заменик секретарот на Америка ја подвлекол важноста на преговорите на босанските партии во Сараево, како и посветеноста на САД на интеграциите на Србија во Евро-атланските структури.

За време на средбата се зборувало за Македонија, и Министерот Моратинос рекол дека скоро имал средба со грчкиот премиер Папандреу, на која Папндреу укажал дека е подготвен да тргне кон решавање на проблемот со името со Македонија. Заменик секретарот Стаинберг потврдил дека слушнал такви извештаи и од други страни и дека премиерот Папандреу треба брзо да дејствува во спорот со името. Исто така сугерирал дека премиерот Папандреу и премиерот Груевски треба да работат еден со друг директно, без посредници. Рекол дека се надева дека двете страни ќе најдат решение, бидејќи се веќе направени мали чекори кон прогрес. Подвлекол дека ЕУ треба цврсто да застане во поддршка на евентуалното решение до кое би се дошло.

Десет години по доаѓањето на речиси 350.000 бегалци во Македонија од Косовската криза, Владата на Р. Македонија заедно со УНХЦР Скопје работи на создавање решение за останатите околу 1.600 бегалци и баратели на азил, речиси сите етнички Роми. Во октомври Владата отворила центар за бегалци и донела национален акциски план за интеграција на бегалците до ноември, обезбедувајќи речиси еден милион евра за програмата во 2010. Иако продолжуваат плановите за интеграција, зголемен број бегалци сакаат да се вратат на Косово (од 50 годишно бројот е покачен на 300). Причината за тоа се гледа во независноста на Косово и зголемените интернационални фондови за помош. УНИХЦР Скопје развило стратегија за наоѓање решение на бегалците, а македонските закони за беглаци и баратели на азил се подобриле, со донесување на Новиот закон за бегалци во Парламентот, кој е според сите стандарди на ЕУ и ОН за азил и времена заштита.

На средбата од 20 јануари помеѓу амбасадорот Speckhard и грчкиот министер за надворешни работи Димитри Друцас, американскиот амбасадор го предупредил Друцас дека мора да му покаже на Вашингтон дека е способен да се соочи со отворените регионални проблеми. Тој го советувал да се подготви да зборува за деталите околу Македонија; какво решение Грција може да понуди за Кипар, и за Турција. Друцас рекол дека се надева оти Вашингтон гледа дека Папандреу прави напори во грчко-турските односи, а како и во случајот со Турција, така и со Македонија, Папандреу се обидува да воспостави лични односи за да се решат споровите. Турција останува приоритет во надворешната политика, а грчката порака до Македонија пред ЕУ средбата во декември била дека „се подготвени, ако и другата страна е подготвена“, но не виделе вистински напор од Македонија за изнаоѓање решение. Друцас ги опишал средбите со македонскиот министер за надворешни, Милошоски, како пријателски и топли. Рекол дека ако треба да испрати само една порака до Скопје, тоа би било да се избегнуваат јавни изјави кои ќе ги нарушат билатералните односи.

Донацијата е со цел да и се помогне на македонската армија (АРМ) во рамките на ИСАФ (интернационалните безбедносни сили) во Авганистан.

Според депешата, овие уреди не влијаат на воените сили во земјата, ниту ќе предизвикаат реакција од соседите. Нивната донација ќе им помогне на македонските сили во идентификување на пријателските воени трупи на САД и НАТО. Македонија веќе поседува III NVDs, и има безбедносно знаење и процедури потребни за работа со овие уреди, па тие не претставуваат ниту внатрешна закана. За работата со овие уреди ќе биде потребен само 10-дневен тренинг на 2 до 3 лица во земјата, а ќе го изведе регуларниот состав на САД во земјата. За оваа донација не се потребни дополнителни средства од земјата, бидејќи U.S. FY10 NDAA section 1206 authority ги донира уредите.

20:01 PM Wikileaks’ partner Semana reveals Venezuelan opposition deputy Ismael García requested U.S. funds for his party Podemos through the National Endowment for Democracy, according to a 2009 diplomatic cable.
Confronted with U.S. ambassador Patrick Duddy’s refusal, García suggested U.S. interests faced potential risks due to Cuban and Iranian involvement in Venezuela, and that it was time for the U.S. to start intervening in the country.

According to data released by WikiLeaks last year, between 2004 and 2009 24, 498 people died in Afghanistan- over 4,000 of them civilians caught up in the conflict.

The scenario emerging from the map of deaths is breathless. It shows a high rate of enemy and civilian victims followed by Afghan and coalition troops deaths. According to Italian CABLE 08ROME1231, “The Alitalia airline must remain Italian,” is what PM Silvio Berlusconi said during the spring 2008 election campaign.

The cost of saving Alitalia versus the return did not matter . After the Air France KLM deal collapsed, Berlusconi was under political pressure to keep Alitalia.

The solution sounded clear: convince a group of wealthy Italian businessmen to commit to rescuing the airline and preserving Italy’s flagship carrier.

The 16 investors - not all personally or politically close to Berlusconi, but receiving his favors - formed CAI (Compagnia Aerea Italiana) and followed a plan of purchase designed by the Italian bank, Intesa Sanpaolo.

Debts amounted to 1 billion euro, yet CAI still flies over Italian skies Rome/Milan route and other intra-Italy routes at high cost altitude.
