'Today I went to see Julian Assange...'

Statement by Michael Moore outside Ecuadorian Embassy, London, posted to Facebook on Friday, 10 June 2016 at 03:15.

Hi, this is Michael Moore, I'm standing here outside the Ecuadorian Embassy, where inside Julian Assange has been under siege, seeking asylum, for nearly four years now. It'll be four years next week.

And I just came out from visiting him for a couple of hours, and I have to say this is absolute madness, that this individual who is responsible for informing us, the American people, of the lies that our government told us, things we never would have known had not WikiLeaks put the truth out there.

And he has been forced, he's been holed up in this embassy here - this is not an apartment building, this is a tiny little office on one little part of this one floor in this building - and it's just wrong, it's shameful, for Americans.

We don't believe in captivity of anyone, right? Without charges? Or trial? The man hasn't been charged with anything. He can't come out of here because if he does, the UK - or if he goes back to Sweden - they're going to deport him to the US, and the US has already taken Manning into prison for telling us the truth, and of course that's what they want to do to the person who put the truth out there.

And I just want to say I'm just standing here as one American, a proud American, a citizen of a country who believes in democracy, believes in transparency - hopefully, right, folks? This is wrong, and the United States should stop this.

President Obama, if you see this, c'mon! You know, whatever may have upset our National Security Agency, the greater good that this man did, and Specialist Manning did, for us, far supersedes anything else here.

So let's end this. Let's tell the UK to end this, let's us end it.

And Sweden? C'mon! You're Sweden for chrissake!

Let's stop this! Let's let him out of this prison, a four-year prison. His crime was to tell us the truth. That's not supposed to be a crime.

And I'm going to continue to do what I can do to help get him his freedom. So do what you can do. Be supportive of this. Thank you. I appreciate it.

4th Embassy Anniversary Vigil Call Out
Sunday 19 June 2016 16:00-18:00
Ecuador Embassy London, 3 Hans Crescent, Knightsbridge
Tube: Piccadilly Line to Knightsbridge

The fourth anniversary of Julian Assange, Editor in Chief of WikiLeaks, entering the Ecuadorian Embassy in London to seek political asylum, is upon us on the 19th of June 2016.

We thank Ecuador for their brave stand in protecting his life and work. For four years he had no sunlight but with his WikiLeaks work has been throwing light on the darkest corners of governments and big business. Join us in celebrating his work within this great movement.

We send a call out to all individuals, human rights groups and organisations, members of the public, to join us in marking the anniversary, showing solidarity and thanking brave Ecuador for protecting Julian Assange's human rights by granting him political asylum.

The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, in a long investigation in which both Sweden and the UK participated, has published its opinion in February 5th this year. It found that Julian Assange is arbitrarily detained. The UN body demands that he should be set free and compensated. Both UK and Sweden refuse to follow the UN opinion and continue to detain the WikiLeaks Editor.

We stand in solidarity with Julian Assange and demand the UK and Sweden adhere to their international obligations under international law, and free and compensate Julian Assange.

Julian Assange has put his Life on the line with his work at WikiLeaks! Defend his human rights against the unjust and arbitrary detention by the UK and Swedish governments.

Defend Julian Assange!
